Cannabis History

The use of cannabis dates back thousands of years, with its origin being traced to China and the Indian Subcontinent.  It was introduced into Western Medicine in the 1840s by William Brooke O’Shaughnessy MD, on Irish physician famous for his work in pharmacology and interventions related to telegraphy.  His medical research led to the development of intravenous therapy and introduced the therapeutic use of Cannabis to Western medicine.  He used cannabis successfully in his patients for it’s analgesic, sedative, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic and anticonvulsant properties.

What is Cannabis and How Does it Work?

Cannabis is a genus of flowering plants that includes multiple subspecies.  In general, they are classified as Cannabis sativa, Cannabis indica, and Cannabis ruderalis. However, these may be the most common of almost 700 variations of the genus.  Over 400 chemical compounds produced by the cannabis plant have been identified.  Over 80 of these compounds are unique to the cannabis plant, and they are called phytocannabinoids.
